Prostate Cancer
Prostate Cancer is a form of cancer that develops int he prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system. Prostate Cancer may cause pain, difficulty in urinating, problems during sexual intercourse, erectile dysfunction and in some cases, death. Prostate Cancer generally affects men over 50 years of age, but it may affect men much younger. Some men have symptoms while others may have no symptoms at all. Prostate Cancer is one of the most prevalent cancer among men. Early detection and treatment is recommended, however, the decision to treat with curative intent is a patient decision dependent on individual patient health and quality of life.
Most prostate cancers are slow growing, however, there are cases which tend to be aggressive and grow more rapidly than others. If you have a family history of prostate cancer, an irregular prostate exam, or unusually high PSA readings, you may wish to have a prostate biopsy (sample) to determine whether or not you may be affected. Early detection and treatment care critical in combating this illness. CT scans and bone scans may be done to see if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
There are various medications and treatments available for prostate cancer which may help to slow the growth of the cancerous cells. Hormonal treatment is the most common treatment. Other treatments may include, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
