Over the past few decades there has been substantial progress in the field of sexual health, however, most of this progress has been concentrated on male sexual health issues when compared to female sexual health issues. Statistics tell us that approximately 43% of adult women experience some type of female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD) and/or hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).
The traditional treatment for women with low sexual arousal and low desire has been some type of psychotherapy conducted by either psychologists or psychiatrists. Pharmaceutical solutions have been limited to herbal remedies or vitamin supplements. Neither approach has proved successful.
There is currently no FDA approved medication for FSAD or HSDD. The female sexual response cycle is complex. It involves psychological, physiological and social factors. It can be stressful on both partners in the relationship.
The good news is there are treatments and therapies which are now being studied in clinical trials.
South Florida Medical Research is committed to helping women with these conditions.
Past trials for female sexual health issues have included studies involving hormone replacement (estrogen and testosterone) as well as vaginal atrophy and low desire.
