Premature Ejaculation (PE) is one of the most common male sexual dysfunctions affecting up to 70% of U.S. males. It is defined as reaching sexual climax with minimal stimulation and before the man wishes it to occur. There are two types of PE:

  1. Primary: Experiencing PE for as long as a man has been sexually active (since the first sexual experience)
  2. Secondary: Experiencing PE after having had previous sexual experiences without ejaculatory problems.

There is no exact cause of Premature Ejaculation. Both psychological and biological factors can play a role in premature ejaculation. Although many men feel embarrassed to talk about it, premature ejaculation is a common and treatable condition. Ongoing research is being done to determine the cause. Although premature ejaculation is often difficult to talk about, it is a serious medical condition. It is important to discuss this issue with your partner and your doctor. Communication, understanding, and treatment are essential to a healthy, pleasurable sexual relationship for both you and your partner. Here are some things to remember about PE when discussing this condition with your partner

  • There is no medical “standard” for how long it should take to ejaculate
  • The exact causes of PE are unknown
  • Avoid blame or anger when discussing PE
  • Address PE sooner rather than later to avoid long-term problems
  • It’s important for both of you to maximize your sexual experiences

Various non-prescription methods can be used including distraction, start-stop methods, desensitizing creams and condom use. Some methods are more effective than others. The key to treat PE is to find what works for both of you.
